Shoulder surgery has traditionally been a neglected subspecialty of orthopaedics in all parts of the world till very recently. Shoulder disorders were poorly understood and all painful conditions were grouped under loose terms like periarthritis and were referred for physiotherapy due to the lack of good treatment alternatives.
However rapid strides have been made in the understanding and management of shoulder disorders with innumerable developments in the last 2-3 years in the western world. These innovations truly reached our shores with the setting-up of a dedicated shoulder surgery service at Apollo speciality hospital, Chennai.
Now all shoulder problems can be correctly diagnosed and specific treatment initiated . Arthroscopy ( key -hole surgery ) which dramatically changed the practice of knee surgery a decade ago is now doing the same to shoulder surgery.
